How to Celebrate the Chinese New Year

  • On Jan 30, 2018

Chinese New Year, also called the Lunar New Year, is celebrated around the world, including the Bay Area. Here is some information about how to prepare for and join in the celebration.

Prepare the Home

The first step in preparations is to clean your home and decorate it with red. Cleaning is commonly thought to clear out any bad luck from the home, and red decorations are believed to be good luck. The number eight is also lucky in Chinese culture, so try to incorporate that number into your decorations, such as hanging eight red lanterns.

Some other decorations that you can set out include food and flowers, as they symbolize growth, good luck, and wealth. Edible objects will also be used in the seven days following the new year to appease the Kitchen God, who is said to report to the Jade Emperor.

Plan Festivities

Once you have finished your preparations, there are a lot of things you can do when it comes to celebrating. Locations throughout the Bay Area, like Casino M8trix, have celebrations going on for everyone to take part in. Casino M8trix is one of the best places for the Chinese New Year. The lucky number “8” is even included in our name! As part of the festivities, Casino M8trix is having a Lion Dance Thursday, February 22 at 8:00pm. The casino will be decorated, and employees are encouraged to dress up in traditional outfits. While some people may choose to dress in traditional clothing for this event, many just embrace the lucky color red.

Firecrackers are another traditional part of this celebration going back to the original myths that surround the holiday. Many events will incorporate fun fireworks in their celebration of the New Year, while others are just great parties that are sizzling with fun.

Common Traditions

As this is a time of celebrating good fortune and happiness, it is important to make sure that you practice bringing goodwill to everyone you interact with. Spreading good fortune and cheer is a fun way to celebrate the occasion with everyone around you and spread positive vibes to the people you are celebrating with.

This is also a time to show respect and gratitude to ancestors that have passed. Many people choose this time of year to recreate a special family tradition to honor and pay their respect for their ancestors and all that they have done.

Whether celebrating at home or events around the Bay Area, there are a lot of different ways that people choose to acknowledge the Chinese New Year. Join the fun at Casino M8trix to honor the Chinese culture and the start of the Year of the Dog.
